7 Months | Ruby Lyndis

web4

This baby is now SEVEN months old. We are closer to her first birthday than we are to the day she was born. Crazy, huh?

On August 8th, 2015 she started to crawl. She’s now into EVERYTHING and is so busy. She also takes way more naps because crawling all over the place is apparently exhausting.

She showed no interest in sitting, and every time you’d make her sit she’d instantly stand up.

Since we are now crawling, bathtime needed some changes, so I put her in a laundry basket during her bath. She loved it, but was more interested in trying to stand up rather than her normal splash fest.

Still a hair puller. But can now add hair licker to her resume. She always tries to eat my hair!

She has eaten pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, bananas and apple sauce. She didn’t like pears very much. Hates green beans and bananas. Loved carrots but threw up both times she had them (try it again later.) She also loves sweet peas and apple sauce.

She accidentally had her first taste of ice cream this month, when she attacked and sucked it down as quickly as she possibly could.

She loves to babble!

She is the happiest little girl I’ve ever met. She only cries when she’s hungry or tired. Otherwise she’s full of smiles and giggles. And often, slobbery kisses!

She thinks her siblings are funny and often smiles when they come in the room.

She wakes me up every morning by licking my face and laughing.

She sleeps in her own bed from 9:00 p.m. until about midnight and then she gets lonely and comes snuggle with me until 7 when she eats and takes a morning nap.

6 Months Old! | Ruby Lyndis

I give up, I’m a broken record. But I will never understand how my babies can grow so quickly! They grow up so fast!! Time could really slow down now and I’d be totally cool with it.

DSC_1662(1)

Miss Ruby is now half a year old! Can you believe it?!

She babbles all the time.

Is a pro at rolling over and uses it to get around.

The first thing she does to the person holding her is pull their hair.

Then she tries to eat their hair.

She will only take a pacifier if she’s sleepy.

Otherwise she’s a thumb sucker, with no preference (usually it’s the right thumb but she doesn’t care.)

She smiles when you talk to her.

She’s ticklish!

She adores her big brother.

Is terrified of her Audrey.

Smiles at her Sydney.

Mama is one of the only people she will let put her to sleep.

She still sleeps in our bed.

This month she got to travel to Idaho and watch her Uncle Ryan graduate from BYU-I, and while there she got to meet all her aunts and uncles (and cousin!) on the Sherman side.

No teeth.

Hates bananas, but will eat a few bites of sweet potatoes.

Got to go swimming for the first time, she LOVED it.

She weights 15lbs 8oz and is 26 inches long.

8 Years Old! | Sydney Capri

DSC_1623(1)

Sydney Capri is now 8 years old!!! How is that possible?

My first born baby is amazing. She is brilliant, sassy, and loves to read.

She woke me up on her birthday asking me, “Where’s the first Harry Potter book?!” (I’ve told her since she was small that she can’t read the books until she turns 8.)

This year she has suddenly turned shy when she’s around anyone but immediate family.

She also developed this highly over exaggerated (and loud!) laugh that she swears is her real laugh.

She stays up most nights later than I do reading all night, so now she tries to sleep in.

She is 3’10” tall.

She decided this year that she would just take tap, instead of the years previous in which she took tap and ballet.

During her first tap focus class of the school year she came home crying because someone told her she was short. Apparently she didn’t know she was short, seeings as we homeschool and she’s the 3rd tallest in our family 😉

She still takes piano lessons.

She loves to swim!

She was able to get a pumpkin in the bucket at BIZI Farm’s pumpkin launch!

We bought Hocus Pocus and watched it with the kids, I mentioned that I’ve never seen the movie all the way through I’d always fall asleep. When the movie was over Sydney asked me why I fell asleep, because it’s such a great movie. I told her the commercials would come on and I’d be out. “What’s a commercial?”

We had a few snow flakes fall from the sky and Sydney sat next to the window singing, “Let it snow!”

Mama: Who won the battle between Alfred the Great and the Vikings?
Sydney: Aslan the Great.

We walked the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving (5k) and on the way home Sydney was falling asleep in the car. When we tried to keep her awake she said, “Just let me blink!” They were very long blinks.

Sydney: 15-8 is hard!
Me: It’s 7, it was one of the ones I just had to memorize.
Sydney: Are you sure it’s 7?
Me: Yes.
Sydney: How can you be sure?
Me: I passed the 2nd grade.

She questions everything and everyone, which is a great trait to have…in 10 years.

She held an alligator.

IMG_3594

She lost 4 teeth this year, including her front two teeth.

As always I am in awe of this beautiful girl I’ve been blessed with. She is brilliant, gorgeous, caring and sweet. She is the best big sister I’ve ever met, and her younger siblings are lucky to have her as their ring leader.

Dear Sydney | The End of Second Grade

DSC_1563

Dear Sydney,

My girl we have finished the 2nd grade, can you believe it? What a crazy year this has been for our family! We moved during the second week of school, and had to adjust to our new lives at Grandma and Papa’s house. Your relationship with your grandparents has grown by leaps and bounds and I love the bond you have with them. To add to the crazy we also added our gorgeous crazy Audrey to our school and we’ve all had to learn how to adjust to that.

And then we had Ruby half way through! Talk about a year of change! As usual you’ve handled it so well and I couldn’t be more proud of you. Except that I know I will be even more proud to be your mama tomorrow. You make me prouder every day, I love you so much!

This year you read some fascinating books, you fell in love with Beverly Cleary’s books, Socks being your favorite. You passed off All About Spelling Level 2, and we started a new handwriting program this year. Math presented a new challenge this year but as usual you have proven that you are up to the task. Your art work is amazing and it’s incredible how well you do at art, and how much you love it!

This year you have made my heart swell with pride as I’ve watched you care and love on your siblings. The way you’ve noticed when Audrey has been upset and how you reminded her of how smart and wonderful she is. The way you are my big helper by helping me get everyone safely into the car, I think you know better than most adults what proper car seat safety is, and best of all you speak up when it’s done wrong! You’re help has been incredibly welcomed as we brought Ruby into our family this year. It’s been nice to know that I can hand you the baby while I go pee and that you will keep her safe.

As usual, I am in awe of you, and I have loved watching you grow and learn this year. There is no one better to teach me how to be a mama, or how to be a homeschool mama. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me, and thank you for giving me the privilege of getting to watch you become an amazing person. You are thoughtful and kind, you are brilliant and beautiful, and you will set the world on fire with that amazing combination. I love you to the moon and back, my sweet girl.

Can’t wait for next year.

Love, Mama.

First Grade | Kindergarten

For those keeping track Sydney read a total of 3,291 pages to herself as part of school. This total does not include all the books she checked out from the library for fun, or the books we read to her.

5 Months Old! | Ruby Lyndis

DSC_1545

This sweet babe is 5 months old, can you believe it?!

She weighs 13lbs 6oz, but she is SO chunky! I didn’t know it was possible to have wrist and ankle rolls! I’m so in love with it.

She is super smiley and gives great smiles to everyone who talks to her.

She is now rolling over like a champ!

Still eating 6oz bottles.

Sleeps through the night.

She pinches and pulls hair.

But she also gives slobbery kisses, so we go with it.

She LOVES to stand up, any time we put her in a sitting position she is trying to stand.

She loves to kick her legs and bathtime has now become a shower for mama as well.

She gets super giggly, especially when it comes to her brother.

She found her feet!

She will still take a pacifier, but sometimes she prefers her thumb.

She wears size 3-6 and 6 month clothes.

No interest in food yet.

Her favorite toy is a stuffed giraffe that Jordan named “Gentleman Giraffe.” She thinks he’s pretty awesome.

She won’t fall asleep on her own, and will fuss like crazy until you turn her on her side, then she snuggles in and puts her face in the crook of my elbow and falls asleep.

5 Years Old | Audrey Thyme

DSC_1595(1)

Just whoa.

Happy Birthday, Audrey bug! <3

My sweet girl turned FIVE. She’s getting ready for Kindergarten at the end of August.

Ready for the funnies of our amazing girl?

Daddy threw away a package of gummy bears. Audrey suddenly ran to the bathroom and locked the door (which is unusual that the door was even shut) and when she came out her mouth was bulging. When asked how many were in her mouth she could barely talk but said, “One!” as two fell out.

We went to the Olive Garden for dinner and Audrey special requested an olive. Just one.

While at the dentist he made a comment about her lack of tonsils. So on the drive home she bursts into tears, sad about missing her tonsils. Then at Family Home Evening we asked if there was anything anyone wanted to discuss, Audrey raised her hand and starts crying, “I don’t have any tonsils!”

Audrey was poking herself in the eye and then told us, “My eye hurts, RIGHT HERE!”

“How about you name that baby girl so you can hurry up and have her? Deal?!” [When I was 6 months pregnant with Ruby.]

Mama had a bunch of 5 gallon water bottles in her car that Daddy forgot to take out, when she turned a corner one fell over. Audrey said, “Just ask Daddy really nicely to take them out of your car. And if he doesn’t do it then you kick him out of the house!”

Me: Do you know what that says? That says Thyme, like Audrey’s middle name and mama’s middle name!
Audrey: I didn’t know that was my middle name!
Me: why do you think we call you Audrey Thyme?
Audrey: ‘Cause you’re silly.

Sydney: Did you know the pioneers came to Utah and built the salt lake temple?
Audrey: They built it all by themselves?!

Me: Audrey don’t run with a pencil!
Audrey: How about an eraser? Can I run with an eraser?

Audrey decided it was time to watch the first Christmas movie of the season. She choose Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, when it finished she sighed and said, “Well that was awful!”

Audrey: Why does Sydney get a baptism towel?
Me: She’s going to be baptized in August, because she will be 8.
Audrey: Why does Sydney get to be 8?!

 Jordan: Where are you going?
Audrey: I’m leaving! Sydney won’t play with me, and Zachary is stinky and he will stink up my toys!

Audrey: Mama, why does Zachary have cracks in his belly?
Me: Those are called veins.
Audrey: Are you sure? I think he’s cracking.

Me: First day back to school, we don’t have another break until Ruby is born!
Audrey: WE DON’T GET A BATHROOM BREAK UNTIL RUBY IS BORN?!?!?

Our little lady is still as dramatic as ever, she loves her baby sister. For the most part she and Sydney play so well together! Zachary and her are frienemies, and it changes every four seconds. She loves to sing, and is still enjoying gymnastics. She is 3’4″ tall (9th percentile) which means she grew 3 inches in a year.

4 Months Old! | Ruby Lyndis

DSC_1319

Miss Ruby is now 4 months old! I can’t believe it’s only been 4 months, it feels like she’s been in our family forever!

This sweet pea is now 12lbs 2oz and 24 inches long!

She talks all the time, and loves to chew on her hands. Occasionally she still shoves that right thumb in her mouth.

She drinks 6 ounces of formula at a time.

She goes to sleep around 9 p.m., and wakes up around 6 a.m. Sometimes she wakes up once between that but just wants to cuddle and then goes back to sleep.

Most of her sleeping now occurs in her own bed, which is nice! Occasionally she still wants to cuddle though.

She’s started to giggle!

She’s also started to roll, but only rolls half way over and is content with that.

She adores her big brother.

She LOVES to be naked and enjoys having her diaper changed. Big smiles and lots of giggles when she’s naked.

When You Think You’re Failing

Since I’ve spent this entire school year pregnant, and then with a newborn it’s had it’s challenges.

Especially since this is Audrey’s first year doing school with us.

And unfortunately she’s gotten the short end of the stick.

 Preschool hasn’t gotten done.

And not because she isn’t cooperative. Unfortunately it’s just the opposite, she’s been begging to do school.

The cute assignments have gotten done. Eventually.

Reading took a back burner and we just worked on flash cards.

The stories I was suppose to read to her just didn’t happen.

And our coconut tree? Yeah, it’s got the letters A and B on it. :(

In short, I was failing Audrey.

First step? Realizing it.

Second step? Make a plan.

Luckily I’m great at making a plan.

So one Sunday night I opened up that weeks folder for school, grabbed the four books for the week. I made four piles, one for each day of the school week. I stacked them on top of each other (the books being the divider) and I left it on the table. With our All About Reading book on top.

I also realized that piano practice had slipped through the cracks. So when it’s time to do school I sit down with Audrey first, while Sydney plays the piano. When it’s time to switch Audrey to reading out loud I have Sydney start her math worksheet.

Audrey and I work through her pile of things to do, finishing with a book being read her to. Often I do this while I’m feeding Ruby, but the point is that we do not leave the table. We stay right there, because if we get up it won’t get finished. After I read her book to her, she reads to me from All About Reading.

We are going back over the first book and making sure she can read each of the stories fluidly with little time spent sounding out each. and. every. word. We are going slowly to make sure the concepts are reinforced.

After a few months of using this method I can say that our school work goes a lot smoother, Audrey is happier and her reading has improved drastically!

So what do you do when you’re failing your child? Stop. Fix it. Make a plan. Start again. Make it work.

3 Months Old | Ruby Lyndis

DSC_1301

This girl is SO sweet! She’s also three months old this month!

She’s a pro at holding up her head.

She’s starting to support her weight when lifted into a stand.

She’s smiling at everyone!

She loves to talk!

She’s slept through the night a couple of times.

Around 8pm she gets really fussy and wants to snuggle until she falls asleep, and then you can move her to her bed and she’ll stay asleep for at least 4 hours.

We discovered this month that the poor babe was really hungry. I nursed her for two hours straight and she was still frantic and angry!mad screaming so Jordan gave her a bottle only to have her chug 3oz, which was unbelievable because she only drinks 4oz at a time. Poor thing. Since we started formula she’s happy all the time and rarely cries, unlike previously where she’d be labeled a fussy baby and the doctor thought she might have colic. Nope, she’s just hungry!

She’s now in the one-sized bumGenius diapers, on the smallest setting.

She wears size 3 month clothes.

She LOVES her brother, and he adores her!

No interest in rolling yet.

She’s a slobbery baby! She is always blowing spit bubbles or drooling on something.

She discovered her hands! Now they always go in the mouth.

She got her ears pierced this month, and she got pretty garnet earrings, which is her birth stone.

She celebrated her first Easter this month, and survived her first Sherman kid birthday party (Zachary turned 3.) As per tradition we did a Bunny picture of Ruby’s first Easter. She and Zachary were not amused.
