Dear Sydney | The End of Second Grade

DSC_1563

Dear Sydney,

My girl we have finished the 2nd grade, can you believe it? What a crazy year this has been for our family! We moved during the second week of school, and had to adjust to our new lives at Grandma and Papa’s house. Your relationship with your grandparents has grown by leaps and bounds and I love the bond you have with them. To add to the crazy we also added our gorgeous crazy Audrey to our school and we’ve all had to learn how to adjust to that.

And then we had Ruby half way through! Talk about a year of change! As usual you’ve handled it so well and I couldn’t be more proud of you. Except that I know I will be even more proud to be your mama tomorrow. You make me prouder every day, I love you so much!

This year you read some fascinating books, you fell in love with Beverly Cleary’s books, Socks being your favorite. You passed off All About Spelling Level 2, and we started a new handwriting program this year. Math presented a new challenge this year but as usual you have proven that you are up to the task. Your art work is amazing and it’s incredible how well you do at art, and how much you love it!

This year you have made my heart swell with pride as I’ve watched you care and love on your siblings. The way you’ve noticed when Audrey has been upset and how you reminded her of how smart and wonderful she is. The way you are my big helper by helping me get everyone safely into the car, I think you know better than most adults what proper car seat safety is, and best of all you speak up when it’s done wrong! You’re help has been incredibly welcomed as we brought Ruby into our family this year. It’s been nice to know that I can hand you the baby while I go pee and that you will keep her safe.

As usual, I am in awe of you, and I have loved watching you grow and learn this year. There is no one better to teach me how to be a mama, or how to be a homeschool mama. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me, and thank you for giving me the privilege of getting to watch you become an amazing person. You are thoughtful and kind, you are brilliant and beautiful, and you will set the world on fire with that amazing combination. I love you to the moon and back, my sweet girl.

Can’t wait for next year.

Love, Mama.

Dear Sydney,

This year was tough. But you overcame some incredibly obstacles. Sometimes I feel that your biggest obstacle is having me as a mother. I tend to push you too hard at times, over schedule and under prepare. That was very much the case with this school year. Add into that being tired, unmotivated and then ending the school year with being exhausted because of pregnancy.

But you overcame them all. You are such an incredible person, and as always I am humbled that Heavenly Father sent you to me. You are the sweetest girl I know, and you are so smart! You are flexible, and you put up with me. Usually with a smile on your face. I spend hours planning and working on your curriculum, and you make it totally worth every second.

At the beginning of this school year you tested at a 4th grade reading level. For being six and only reading for the past year and a half it just blew me away, as you always do! By the end you tested at a 6th grade level. I enjoy watching you devour books. Especially books that I enjoyed when I was younger. This year you read so many Magic Tree House books there’s no way for me to count them. You ended the year by starting The Chronicles of Narnia, The Magician’s Nephew. You learned about space, and loved hearing about planets. You took the debate about Pluto being a planet seriously, and still sided with your mama. Hearing you spout off addition and subtraction facts brings a smile to my face, you do it faster than Daddy! We did something different this year for history, and you made the transition well. Just recently we watched The Prince of Egypt and I was thrilled to hear that you still remember about the two kingdoms of Egypt. You were brave and tried a bunch of new foods this year from China, Japan, South Korea and India.

You never cease to amaze me, darling girl. You are so brave! This year you lost your first two teeth, but you did so in an unconventional way. Both teeth needed to be pulled because your permanent teeth popped through but didn’t make the baby teeth wiggly. The second tooth the dentist removed, which included getting laughing gas, which you did all by yourself! I think I was more nervous than you were.

I love and adore you, my Sydney Capri, and I look forward to next year with you. Second grade, are you ready?!

Love, Mama

[Here are some page stats for you! During school this year Sydney and I read a total of 2,762 pages together. And by herself Sydney read 3,381 pages!]

Dear Sydney,

Have I ever told you how much I love having you as my first born? You have taught me how to be a Mama, which is the best title I hold. I am honored to be your mother. I can’t believe we have finished up your first year of school, Kindergarten is over! I love that I have gotten to be there for all of your important “firsts.” I was there when you took your first breath, when you learned to roll over, learned to walk, and said your first (and favorite) word, “Hi!” I am glad that I was there when you first learned to read last year. I have enjoyed watching as the world of words has opened up to you, and watched as you devoured book after book. I love that you use your gift of reading to read to others, you are an excellent story-teller already! Audrey and Zachary love it when you read to them, and I love that you do it often.

This year you learned to skip-count by 2s, 5s, and 10s; you learned how to tell time. You’ve almost mastered shoe tying. All of your teeth are still in your mouth 😉 You learned to add and subtract numbers. You, my dear, are brilliant, and I hope you never forget that. I hope you always enjoy reading and making up stores. I am so proud of you when you play piano, “Old Pig Donald” is my favorite. We raised caterpillars into butterflies, Olive went from tadpole to frog, and we hatched chickens.

Thank you for being my first born, thank you for being my practice child. You have been incredibly patient with me this year when I wasn’t always sure what I was doing, thank you! And most of all, thank you for taking this homeschooling journey with me, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can’t wait for 1st grade!

I love you very much, my Sydney Capri!
Love,
Mama <3
